Get Clean at Lavaggio's

The problem with placing your coveted automobile in the hands of a car wash is…

well, it’s risky. Who knows how many scratches, dents or stains your brand new Benz will sustain when letting your baby go into the pit of brushes, soap squirter’s and other alien tools that are designed to “clean” your car. What happened to a classic hand wash? None of us have time to wash cars ourselves and, frankly, few of us want to. That’s probably why the artisans at Lavaggio created a business model after “The Art of Auto Detail.”

No more dings, micro scratches or water stains – just detailing, pure and simple. On Saturday September 26th from 11am to 5pm, these guru car detailer’s are rocking the casbah with a grand opening celebration. Rock music, BBQ, raffles, exotic car display – you name it, it’s there.

Jessica Simpson’s Dog Taken By A Coyote

Pet Protection Tips

Recently, Jessica Simpson had her precious Malti-Poo Daisy was taken by a coyote in front of her very own eyes.  Daisy was given to her by her ex-husband Nick Lachey. The singer posted on Twitter the following statement “My heart is broken because a coyote took my precious Daisy right in front of our eyes. HORROR!”

The area that we call home is one that we share with coyotes. Homeowners in suburban areas such as Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village and throughout LA County areas have noticed the coyotes have become increasingly bold over the recent years. They have injured or killed pets, as have bit children and adults. The abundance of food, water and shelter available in suburban environments draws the wily animals into residential neighborhoods, where they soon learn that most humans are not a threat.  Once comfortable in suburbia, some coyotes become proficient in attacking domestic cats and small dogs as prey.

Here are some prevention tips to share with your family friends and neighbors:

  1. Keep small pets (cats, small dogs and other pets) indoors from dusk until dawn.   Or keep pets in a coyote-proof yard, area or cage from dusk until dawn.
  2. Install a fence or convert your fence to prevent coyotes from entering your yard.
  3. Feed your pets indoors.  Or if you feed them outdoors do so during the day and never leave pet food out at night.
  4. Make sure trash is not left outside in bags and that all trash cans have secure lids with locking mechanisms.  Secure the cans to a fence or wall with rope or elastic cord so the trash cannot be tipped over.
  5. Install motion sensitive lights in your back yard and around your house.
  6. Don’t leave fruit, berries or compost on the ground or uncovered.
  7. Don’t overflow bird-feeders. Hang them high or in areas that are not accessible to coyotes.
  8. NEVER feed coyotes.
  9. You can install one or more 7 foot or higher posts with a platform at the top for cats to use as an escape from coyotes.  The posts need to be made of a material that the cats can climb.  When being chased by a predator a cat can climb the post and sit on the platform until it is safe to descend and the coyote is gone.
  10. Clear brush and vegetation to remove habitat for small animals that may attract coyotes and to remove areas where coyotes can hide while stalking their prey.
  11. Always keep pets on a leash when walking in parks, forest areas or in residential areas.

Rats Invade Neighborhoods

Yes, we live in a community that has all kinds of wildlife.

By Patte Gilbertg1minkies

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a number of pest control companies who have come out to “investigate and resolve” rat issues and I would like to pass on this advice from them to you.

Where do rats lives? They live under wood piles or lumber that is often not being used. They are under bushes, vines, garden rocks, and around trash and garbage that has been left outside on the ground. In the home they live in the insulation of the walls, ceilings and crawl spaces or behind cupboards, counters, bathtubs and shower stalls. They can also live near hot water heaters and furnaces and attics.

What brings rats into your yard or neighborhood? Garbage cans with loose lids, food for pets, fruits and berries that have fallen to the ground and dog droppings.

What do rats eat when they get IN the house? THE SAME FOOD WE DO.

How do we keep rats away from your home?

* Stack wood 18 inches off the ground and away from the side of your home

* Keep garbage can lids closed tightly

* Plant bushes AWAY from your house and remember “climbing vines” and “overgrown tree branches” give rats an easy way to run up the wall of your house and get into your attic via your eaves and roof tiles.

* Pick up fruit and vegetables in your yard and do not leave your pet food outside.

Follow this simple advice and the rats will avoid your home. Remember, “if you feed them, they will stay”.

Plans for the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Campground – to be located on land once owned by President Reagan and his wife, Nancy – will be displayed at a fundraiser for the campground September 26 at Mill Creek Equestrian Center, Topanga.

The seven-acre site for the proposed campground is located in Malibu Creek State Park.

“We have been working toward this day for over 30 years,” said Ruth Gerson, chair of the campground committee to raise funds, “and we are committed to finalizing the project as the first equestrian campground in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, where visitors will drive into the park and have a campsite with corrals for their horses.  Additionally, this facility will provide people with access to about 500 miles of public trails in the Santa Monica Mountains.  Historically, President Reagan used the land for his horses, and this campground will continue that use of the land.”

Swine flu H1N1 virus – Las Virgenes School District Releases Info Regarding Symptoms

Preventive Measures For Flu Season
By Jeff Biebuyck
Bookmark and Share

Nurse Gloria Doran with the Las Virgenes School District has released the following information concerning the coming fall flu season including the new flu virus called the H1N1 virus, previously called swine flu. We hope the flu season will be mild, but it is important to be prepared with information about how to avoid becoming ill or spreading illness to others.

Flu-like symptoms include:

Fever (over 100 degrees), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, feeling very tired, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommend that all individuals with influenza-like illness should remain home until at least 24 hours after they are fever-free without the use of fever reducers such as acetominophen or ibuprofen. Additionally, ill people should avoid contact with others.

It is important to teach your children how to reduce their risk of getting the flu and how to protect others from becoming infected. If we all practice the ABC’s of good hygiene, health officials believe we can limit the spread of flu viruses and many other contagious diseases in our schools and communities.

  • A – Avoid touching your hands to your eyes, nose and mouth. Do not share drinking cups or eating utensils.swine-flu
  • B – Be sure and wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds – about as long as it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice. Alcohol-based sanitizers are also effective in reducing the spread of the flu virus.
  • C – Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of your elbow. Wash hands after blowing nose or coughing into a tissue and properly disposing of used tissues.
  • D – Don’t send a sick child to school. Stay home when sick with fever and cough. Maintain a distance of at least three feet from other people to prevent the spread of illness.
  • E – Ensure your child is immunized for both seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu when the vaccine is available.

We encourage you to check the LVUSD website periodically for updated information.

Fire Prevention Week for Southern California, October 4-10, 2009

Fire Season Has Arrived In Southern California

By Tom GeiserFPWwidget

Bookmark and Share

Since erupting August 26th, the Station Fire, burning in southern California, has ravaged more than 140,000 acres, killed two firefighters, destroyed more than five dozen homes, and is the largest wildfire in Los Angeles county in over 100 years.

We are very fortunate this year.  So far our homes have not been threatened by fire.  The National Fire Protection Association, NFPA, is sponsoring fire prevention week.  Here are some fire facts you should know to keep you and your family safe this fire season.

*  1.2 million acres of US woodland is burned each year.

*  Weather conditions directly contribute to wildfires. Extended periods of drought that create large quantities of fuel for fire.

* Lightning strikes the Earth over 100,000 times a day. 10-20% cause a fire.

*  A large wildfire, is capable of creating is own weather.

* Running crown fires are a firefighter’s worst nightmare because they burn extremely hot, travel rapidly and can change direction quickly. Crown fires spread by wind moving quickly along the tops of trees.

This Fire season be vigilant and report suspicious behavior to authorities.  In the words of Smokey The Bear, “Only you can prevent forest fires”.
