“Bash” Mendes makes his mark

Sebastian Mendes, Agoura Hills surf star, is only 8 years old. But that hasn’t stopped the 60 pound surf rat from attaining a slue of famed sponsors like DVS, ValSurf, Matix and Body Glove. I’ve been watching this young star rip since he was 5 years old as I am close friends with the Mendes family. His father Anthony is the owner of Winner’s New York Pizza in Agoura Hills, one of Sebastian’s favorite restaurants.

Sebastian and the family visit the North Shore many times per year to expose Sebastian to some of the best waves in the world. He has spent time around Kelly Slater and other numerous surf legends. Sebastian is currently leading the under-9 championship for the Western Surfing Association. He leads by 2,752 points, a nearly insurmountable lead. I wish Sebastian luck in the years to come. He will undoubtedly be a successful surfer.

Hiking in Oak Park and Agoura Hills

One the fabulous perks of living in Agoura Hills and Oak Park is the close proximity to the Cheeseboro trails. China Flat, one my favorite trails in the area, is the newest addition to the Cheeseboro Canyon/Palo Comado Canyon Site. It sits beneath the 3,000ft Simi Peak, the highest peak in the Simi Hills.

The China Flat Trail, which can be accessed from Old Agoura or Oak Park, is a steep hike with expansive, panoramic views of Simi Valley, Oak Park, and Agoura Hills. From the top, the trail follows the southern perimeter of China Flat.

You heard correctly, stroll into the CVS on Kanan Road in Agoura Hills and you can receive an H1N1 vaccination for a maximum of $15.  Answer some brief automated questions and prepare for your shot.  The process is very speedy as not many people are privy to the recent information.  Head over to CVS and within 2 weeks you’ll have immunity.

If You're Sick, Please Stay Home

After being in the hospital for 4 days with my daughter, I really started to think.covercoughimage3

Why do parents send their children to school sick?  I just received a call from the Las Virgenes School District asking, or should I say  pleading parents not to send their children to school ill.  I know that at my daughters school alone, there is about 15% of the students with the flu.  I didn’t say H1N1, I said the flu.  We all have to do our part, here is the information that can keep our families healthy:

1.  Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2.  “Hands-off-the-face” approach.  Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3.  *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don’t trust salt).  *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms.  Simple gargling prevents proliferation.

4.  Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water.  *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5.  *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C.  *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6.  *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can.  *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction.  They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomache here they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

The Grass Isn't Always Greener

Have you ever imagined Paradise?

Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat

What is the definition of the perfect get-away?  Is it you and your significant other without the kids, bills, work and chores?  Welcome to “Couples Retreat” starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, and Kristin Davis.  This endearing storyline focuses on four couples and their different views of paradise, and how sometimes though it may seem “greener” in paradise you find that your own backyard was what you wanted the whole time.

For me this movie was entertaining in many different ways.  The scenery was incredible and actually looked like it could only be “Hollywood” created but wasn’t.  Couple’s Retreat was filmed on Bora Bora and what you see is the real thing.  The cast was engaging and the storyline funny.  It’s about four couples, their different dynamics and just how far you will go to help a friend when you think there is a silver lining in it for yourself, when in fact that said silver lining might just rock the very foundation you thought you were happy with.  Entertaining movie, worth the ticket price and the smile it will put on your face.
